One of the newest Gift With Purchase sets LEGO gifted was the 40700 Winter Holiday Train, which was available during the Black Friday Weekend with a spend of over £155. It's a great set, arriving just in time for the festive season and will look great displayed on its own or added to your LEGO Winter Village Collection.
In this article, we'll take you through the entire build process, bag by bag, so you can experience the joy of assembling this enchanting holiday train step-by-step.
SEASONAL LEGO STEAM TRAIN
FIRST STOP
LEGO 40700 comprises 294 pieces split into three bags, and there are two instruction booklets. The first instruction book has seventy-one steps for building the locomotive and one carriage with gifts. The second instruction booklet consists of twenty-five steps for building the second carriage with gifts and a rotating tree.
The locomotive is built upon a grey 2x12 plate, with gold 2x2 plates adding width and a touch of festive colour. The base is turned over to add four modified 1x2 bricks with pin holes and a modified 2x2 with pin holes. These then have grey connectors inserted, which later house the wheels.
Green bricks are added to build up the driver’s cab/engine room, and there are even a couple of gauges featured in there.
Once the cabin has been completed, the front section of the locomotive is built separately using grey and red pieces. Once this is attached, lights and buffers are added to the front of the engine.
Ten black and green jumper plates are added along the middle of the train; these are used to affix the boiler section of the locomotive.
The cowcatcher is made up of four red 2x2 flags with flared edges attached to four 1x1 tiles with clips. This section is then added to the front of the train.
SECOND STOP
The locomotive's boiler is built primarily from green and black bricks. Four gold 1x1 clips on the sides hold the gold rails.
The smokestack is an inverted black 2x2 cone with a white clip mechanical claw that holds the white smoke swirl. The locomotive is now completed.
The first gift-filled carriage is built on a green 4x6 plate that just has gold-modified 2x2 tiles, adding a splash of seasonal bling to the colour palette. The carriage is built up to six studs high with green bricks and plates. Four pearl-gold fences adorn the top to keep the stack of blue presents in place.
THIRD STOP
The third and final bag also starts the second instruction booklet. This carriage is built upon a 4x10 green plates and has the same structure as the previously constructed smaller carriage. However, a 2x2 rotating plate has been added for the Christmas tree to be placed on. The tree is crafted from three 2x2 dark green plant pieces topped with a dark green inverted 2x2 cone decked with a pearl gold star piece.
CONDUCTOR’S CONCLUSION
LEGO 40700 Winter Holiday Train is a delightfully festive build to help you get in the holiday spirit. There are a few clever build techniques and the cowcatcher is a great example: simple yet highly effective. The rotating Christmas tree onboard the second carriage is a neat idea and adds to the holiday aesthetic.
Once built, the train and its carriages measure 12” long, a great size to add to your LEGO Winter Display or as a stand-alone display piece. Wherever you decide to display your Winter Holiday Train, it will surely add festive vibes to any room.
How will you be displaying your Winter Holiday Train? Are there other seasonal items you think LEGO should release?
