LEGO Barbie Sets
WHAT COULD LEGO BARBIE LOOK LIKE, AND WHAT ALTERNATIVES CAN YOU BUY?
Come on, LEGO, let’s go Barbie…
2023 is currently experiencing a summer of pink, even if the weather is endlessly grey here in the UK. The new Barbie film blockbuster has been a huge success, helped by Warner Bros’ full-on marketing campaign strategy, which has seen the Barbie pink aesthetic copied by fashion, makeup, and even vacation companies like Airbnb. Unless you’ve been living under a plastic toy box, the cotton-candy-coloured pop-culture icon has undeniably taken centre stage, evoking nostalgia in older generations and renewed interest in the Mattel brand.
Last weekend, we finally got to see Barbie on the big screen for ourselves. We also caught Oppenheimer earlier on the same day so we could experience the unlikely Barbenheimer cultural phenomenon for ourselves. Seeing both on the same day treated us to two masterful, contrasting movies (albeit with closer themes than you might think at first glance). However, we recommend giving yourself a few hours between each film so you have a chance to decompress some of the heavier subject matters!
Can You Buy LEGO Barbie Sets?
Our trip to the cinema did get us imagining what LEGO Barbie sets could look like. Currently, Barbie is not an officially branded sub-theme for LEGO, though, like Star Wars, Nintendo and Marvel, there’s nothing definite to say there might not be a partnership in future.
The closest real-world product for fans who want to see Barbie and LEGO combine is the Mega Construx range. These officially licensed Barbie toys were first created by the MEGA Bloks brand, which launched in 1984 in imitation of the LEGO style and brick design before becoming a subsidiary of Mattel. Over the following years, they have just about managed to avoid copyright issues while successfully offering an alternative to the Danish toy giant.
An official LEGO Barbie movie range does seem unlikely due to the partnership between Barbie creators Mattel and MEGA Construx, although this has not stopped fans from creating their own MOCs.
Instagram user fourstud (who describes themselves as a “designer and part-time plastic block enthusiast”) received plenty of attention after recently posting their own artistic interpretations of what LEGO Barbie sets movie tie-in releases could look like. Check these out above – we’re sure plenty of people who have seen the film would love to get their hands on that Barbie Malibu Dreamhouse model.
One LEGO theme that engages closely with the Barbie ethos is LEGO Friends, which includes similarly empowered female characters and colourful locations. The popular mini-doll line debuted in 2012, spawning a TV series and plenty of kid-friendly sets, including the Beach Amusement Park 41737 and Pet Adoption Café 41699 pictured above.
The theme is a good gift choice for children, as it contains plenty of brick-built scenarios, characters, buildings and vehicles to engage the imagination while providing play and display opportunities. All the different models look fantastic when placed alongside each other, with a similar style to modular building sets.
If you’re looking for LEGO Friends display case options, check out iDisplayit’s display cases by size. Each case is constructed from premium 3mm acrylic so your child can exhibit their toys while keeping them clean and shiny.
