2023 Film Saga Release Calendar – July to December

Earlier this year, we brought you our list of the top new films we were most looking forward to seeing on the big screen between February and June 2023.

With July fast approaching, it’s time to look ahead to what epic sci-fi sagas, reboots, prequels, action thrillers and Marvel epics we’ll be marking as must-see on our calendars for the second half of the year…

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

Mid-summer kicks off with the seventh instalment in the long-running Mission: Impossible film series. The film stars main protagonist Ethan Hunt (played by Tom Cruise), alongside newcomers played by well-known actors and actresses such as Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg and Rebecca Ferguson.

In this latest action-thriller, Ethan and his team must track down a new weapon threatening humanity in ways never seen before. Ethan must also face the darkness of his own past, who directly threaten the mission. Tom Cruise is famous for doing his own stunts in the Mission: Impossible films and previous jaw-dropping feats included scaling the Burj Khalifa (the tallest building in the world at the time). The Marvels

The latest phase (five) of the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues with the sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel. Alongside Bree Larson’s Carol Danvers, fans will get to see Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel back in action (following the 2022 miniseries) and comic-book favourite Monica Rambeau.

When Monica investigates a Kree wormhole in space, she finds herself swapping places with Khan and Danvers every time the trio use their powers. The new squad of kick-ass heroines will team up and battle a destabilised universe to discover why.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

Most 90s kids will have fond memories of watching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cartoons back in the day. Now, Nickelodeon are bringing fans a new computer-generated CGI animated film featuring the turtle team.

This directorial debut from Jeff Rowe will be hard-pressed to match 2022’s well-received anime style Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie, though we’re looking forward to seeing what this latest addition to the franchise can offer. The new film will see the team take on a mysterious crime syndicate in New York City.

Kraven The Hunter

This upcoming American superhero film is the fourth film in the SSU (Sony Spider-Man Universe), and will feature the long-standing comic book character Kraven the Hunter for the first time in live action.

Sony have not yet released a plot summary, though we expect to see Sergei Kravinoff battle against such Spider-Man villains as Rhino and the Foreigner on his quest to become the world’s greatest and most feared hunter.

Dune: Part Two

If you’re looking for our most anticipated film of the year, this is it. 2021’s Dune: Part One lived up to its billing as an “adult Star Wars”, introducing new fans to the stunning, sun-scorched desert planet of Arrakis as envisioned by visionary director Denis Villeneuve. Frank Herbert’s world was dutifully brought to life in a sweeping, 2h 35m epic that was worthy of the golden age of Hollywood cinema.

The sequel will pick up where the first film left off, with Paul Atreides joining the Fremen tribes to take revenge against the Harkonnens, who destroyed his family dynasty.

Rebel Moon

Netflix have produced plenty of their own films since the platform rose to prominence in the last decade, though there have been plenty of misses on their quest to produce a classic. Nevertheless, for every squib the streaming platform has given us, there’s still been plenty of hits, including intriguing sci-fi offerings such as Don’t Look Up and Annihilation.

The synopsis for 2023’s Rebel Moon reads like a classic sci-fi story, with a colony living on the edge of space forced to take a stand against a tyrannical invader. With themes of rebels against oppressors and a heroine with a mysterious past, this promises to be a worthy watch for space opera enthusiasts.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

To see out the year, we’ll be hitting cinemas to catch the next film in the Aquaman franchise, featuring Jason Momoa. If the prospect of seeing Jason swimming around once more in a tight-fitting water superhero outfit isn’t motivation enough, you won’t want to miss the stellar cast line up, which includes Ben Affleck, Nicole Kidman, Patrick Wilson and Amber Heard.

In this latest underwater caper, Aquaman is forced to form an unlikely alliance to save his Atlantis home and the planet beyond.
